Feeling Weird

Bringing attention and joy to inner worlds beyond the neurotypical mind.

2024, abstract series

From a young age, I was acutely aware I was different — some might say a weirdo. My “weird” behaviors manifested as: rapid and inquisitive communication, the persistent pursuit of fairness, and intense emotional reactions.

A Tangled Twist, mixed media on canvas panel, and Move Along Everyone, mixed media on stretched canvas

After 23 years of extensive masking and 4 years of therapy, I was diagnosed with ADHD and autism. Equipped with the knowledge to understand my brain better, I unraveled how my weirdness was stripped away by ableist society and began the journey to realign with my authentic self.

Feeling Weird encourages viewers to sit with each piece and contemplate their inner worlds while honoring different minds. By confronting internalized ableism and capturing the 'aha' moments along the way, I share the critical process of rejecting a curated false identity to move towards self-acceptance.

Detailed patterns emerge through bold, expressive strokes and maximalist layering techniques. Tactile textures and vivid colors reveal cognitive sensory crossovers, visualizing the intrinsic complexity of overstimulated environments, peaceful moments of solitude, and the complexity of introspection.
